Why we’re here:
Bluebird Goods is based on the feeling I used to have when sitting on an old, sage green ladder-back chair in my grandmother’s Galveston kitchen. She measured ingredients by pinches & handfuls, and used well-worn iron skillets. Her dark wood floors were covered with huge old braided rugs, her windows with handmade cotton curtains with modest ruffles along the bottoms. At one point, when my aunts and father were kids, she kept chickens and ducks and used to tell a story about my Aunt Rae leading a parade of them around the yard. Her backyard smelled of pecan shells, magnolia blossoms, and honeysuckle. Galveston island is a hot, humid place in the summer, and I have strong feelings of comfort recalling the beach air, coastal living, and the comfort of rinsing off in a cool claw foot tub at the end of the day in the Gulf.

These are the country decorating and home goods ideals I’m trying to capture in this site. Everything for sale should be something I might have found in her home. She was raised far out in the Texas hill country and kept those values with her in her home decorating. Solid and old is valuable, new and plastic is not. If you can make it by hand, you should.

We here at Bluebird Goods support the idea that home decorating should be a fun scavenger hunt. Isn’t that much more fun than throwing everything into a cart at a big box store? Seeking out the perfect antique or vintage item for your home is rewarding and the ultimate in “reuse/recycle”.

Who we are:
In the photo with me is my youngest daughter and co-conspirator, Sophia. She lives by the credo that there isn’t a room on earth that couldn’t benefit from the addition of a big, drippy chandelier. We garden, create, cook, and decorate together. She helps me sort through the vendors and pick out items for the shop.

Our latest endeavor is taking care of 3 baby chicks, soon to be launched into our small backyard. They’re darling little Easter Eggers who will eventually lay green, pink, and blue eggs for our family.

But of all the chicks who hang out at our house, Sophia is by far the coolest. I hope you enjoy the goodies we pick out together through this site.
